Newly passed legislation requires all appraisal districts to review every homestead exemption for qualification at least every 5 years. The Dallas Central Appraisal District audits the exemption records at least every five years to ensure they are accurate.
In some cases, DCAD may reach out to a property owner to ask for more information to confirm that the exemptions on a property should continue.
Property owners may be required to pay back taxes up to five years if it is determined that they were claiming exemptions on another property or claimed another property as their primary residence during that period.
